The University of Minnesota men’s gymnastics team has released their 2018 competition schedule, head coach Mike Burns announced Monday.
This year’s schedule includes three home competitions in addition to the annual intrasquad and alumni meets.
“The 2018 Schedule will pit us against some very strong opponents this year,” Burns said. “Our first meet of the year is the annual Windy City Invitational and we will see several of the top teams in the Big Ten. Our home schedule will have us facing Iowa, Illinois and Cal-Berkeley who are all tough teams. It's always great to bring in strong teams at home but we also face tough teams on the road this year."
After the Windy City invitational on Jan. 13, the Gophers will host Iowa for their first home action of the year. From there the Gophers will head to Colorado Springs, Colo. to compete against Air Force.
“We'll see Air Force twice on the road this year- once in Colorado Springs and once in a tri-meet at Iowa. They continue to provide a formidable challenge, especially on the road,” Burns said.
Illinois, third place at the 2017 NCAA Championship, rolls into Dinkytown on Feb. 10 for a tough meet. The Winter Cup will be held on Feb. 15 and 17 in Las Vegas, Nev. if any Gophers qualify to compete there.
The Maroon and Gold end February with a competition at Penn State.
“Penn State has historically been a very hard road meet and this year will be no different,” Burns said. “However, preparing for a battle like Penn State on the road will be one of the keys to the team's success this year.”
The Gophers hit the road for back-to-back weeks in early March at UIC and Iowa. UIC is this year’s NCAA Championships host.
“We will also see Iowa twice on the road - once in Iowa City and once in our final regular season meet in a tri-meet at Nebraska,” Burns said. “This end of season meet is always a highlight of the season and it's a "made-for-television" competition with three great Big Ten teams doing battle prior to the championships segment of our season.”
This year’s Big Ten Championships will be held in Ann Arbor, Mich. on April 6-7 and the NCAA Championships take place on April 20-21.
“Having both of these meets in the Midwest will make things a bit easier to manage from a travel standpoint and the NCAA venue at UIC will be very familiar for everyone on the team,” Burns said. “Overall, this is a great schedule for this team as we prepare for the journey of another Golden Gopher men's gymnastics season.”
