Former University of Minnesota gymnast Guillermo Alvarez took third place and current Minnesota gymnast Jake Lee finished in a tie for 11th overall in the all-around finals of the 2006 Visa Men’s Gymnastics Championships at Xcel Energy Center.
Alvarez earned his third place finish by posting a two-day total of 178.150. The Denver, Colo., native was in second place after last night’s preliminary round. Alvarez followed his score of 89.400 on Thursday night with an 88.750 tonight. Alvarez finished third on pommel horse with a score of 29.300 and was fourth on both the floor with a 30.200 and the vault with a 31.600.
Lee entered the night in 15th place overall but improved upon his opening night total of 85.250 by registering a score of 85.600 in the second round to give him a two-day total of 170.850 to tie for 11th overall.
Former Gopher Clay Strother also competed for the Gophers and placed second overall on both the floor with a 30.350 and vault with a 31.750. He was also fourth on the pommel horse with a 29.25.
