MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 6 Gopher men's gymnastics team will host its final home meet of the season this Saturday, when its hosts No. 9 Iowa and Brockport at the Sports Pavilion at 7 p.m.
The Gophers will honor eight departing seniors, Steffen Beck, Zack Chase, Nathan Fortunato, Matt Frey, Adam Kern, Justin Morinishi, John Scallon and Sam Wright. The seniors will be honored for their contributions to Gopher gymnastics.
Penn State Meet Recap
The Gophers' five-meet winning streak ended last weekend when Minnesota lost on the road to Penn State, 440.200 to 431.500.
The Gophers took home two individual event titles in the loss, as senior Zack Chase won vault with a score of 15.300, giving him three vault titles on the season, and junior captain Steve Jaciuk won the high bar with a score of 15.150. Jaciuk also stuck his landing and tied for third on parallel bars with a score of 14.850.
Gophers vs. Iowa and Brockport
The Gophers have already squared off against Iowa twice this season, finishing ahead of the Hawkeyes in both meets. The Gophers finished one place ahead of Iowa at the Windy City Invitational, posting a score of 424.800 to Iowa's 417.700.
The Gophers also traveled to Iowa City last month, where they defeated Iowa and Nebraska with a season-high score of 437.400.
Minnesota last saw Brockport in early 2012, at a meet at the Sports Pavilion featuring the same three teams as this weekend. The Gophers finished first in the three-team meet.
No. 9 Iowa scored a season-high 433.050 in its meet against Minnesota and Nebraska before the Winter Cup, and like the Gophers, they are now adjusting to the "five up, five count" method of scoring.
Iowa scored 431.400 points on the road against UIC the day after the Winter Cup finals, and last weekend Iowa scored 431.600 points in the Arnold Classic.
Brockport is a collegiate club team. The Golden Eagles have competed against several NCAA teams this season, including UIC and William & Mary.
Gophers in the National Rankings
The Gophers dropped one spot in the national rankings after their loss Saturday night, coming in at No. 6 this week. Minnesota remained No. 6 in the coaches poll.
In team events, the Gophers are tied for fourth on vault (73.917), and rank fifth on floor exercise (74.183) and parallel bars (73.067), seventh on high bar (72.017), and eighth on pommel horse (71.133) and still rings (73.750).
Among the individual rankings, junior Ellis Mannon is ranked third on pommel horse (15.233), Zach Chase is fourth on vault (15.217), Matt Frey is sixth on still rings (15.133) and Steve Jaciuk is tied for eighth in the same event (15.067).
After their final home meet of the season, the Gophers' final meet of the regular season is Saturday, March 15 at Nebraska. The meet will also feature Iowa, Air Force and Illinois in addition to the Gophers and Huskers. The meet is set for 4 p.m. CT.
