MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 5 Gopher men's gymnastics team will get back to competing after a week off, as they travel to take on No. 7 Penn State in University Park, Pa., this weekend. The meet is set for 6 p.m. CT Saturday night.
This will be the first meet of the season featuring the "five up, five down" method of scoring, meaning each gymnast's score will count towards the team total.
Winter Cup Recap
The Winter Cup is an annual event that helps determine which gymnasts will comprise the Senior Men's National Team.
Both Gopher gymnasts advanced past the preliminary rounds and into the finals, with Mannon competing in the all-around and Jaciuk competing in the still rings, parallel bars and high bar. Mannon brought home hardware as he finished second on the pommel horse with a two-day total of 28.250.
Mannon finished 19th of the 78 competing gymnasts overall with a two day score of 161.900, while Jaciuk finished 33rd with a score of 82.800.
Gophers vs. Nittany Lions
The Gophers have not faced Penn State since last season, when they hosted the Nittany Lions at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers lost 433.650 to 428.000 at home.
Penn State also finished one spot ahead of Minnesota at the Big Ten Championships last year, taking second with a score of 434.050 while the Gophers ended up third after posting a 430.050.
Penn State sent three gymnasts to the Winter Cup last weekend, though only two of them ended up competing. Trevor Howard finished just ahead of Ellis Mannon in the all-around competition, ranking 17th overall with a two day score of 162.650.
Craig Hernandez also advanced to the final round with his teammate, and he won the pommel horse with a two-day score of 28.600, barely edging out Mannon.
Gophers in the National Rankings
Since teams took a break from competition last week, the national rankings for team events have not changed. The Gophers did drop one place in the coaches poll, however, and are listed at No. 6 in this week's national poll.
In team events, the Gophers are ranked third on floor exercise (74.133), fourth in a three-way tie on vault (73.917), fifth on parallel bars (72.700), and seventh on pommel horse (71.133), still rings (73.750), and high bar (71.817).
Individual rankings did change to reflect competition at the Winter Cup. For the Gophers, junior Sean Bauer is ranked 10th on floor exercise (15.200), Mannon is third on pommel horse (15.233), senior Zack Chase is 10th on vault (15.067), and senior Matt Frey (15.083) and Jaciuk (15.067) are sixth and seventh on parallel bars, respectively.
After competing at Penn State, the Gophers will return to the Sports Pavilion for their final home meet of the season. The Gophers will honor eight departing seniors before they face off against Iowa and Brockport on Saturday, March 8. The action gets underway at 7 p.m.
