Most of the No. 5 Gopher men's gymnastics team will have a week off from competition after their wins on the road against Iowa and Nebraska. The entire team is back in action at Penn State on Saturday, March 1.
Iowa/Nebraska Meet Recap
The Gophers notched their fifth-straight victory last weekend, when they scored a season-high 437.400 points on the road against No. 10 Iowa and No. 11 Illinois. In the win, the Gophers posted their highest scores of the season on pommel horse (72.600) and high bar (72.900).
The Gophers received big scores from several gymnasts, most notably from two competitors on floor and their team captain. Junior Sean Bauer and freshmen Zach Liebler both posted career high scores on the floor exercise with scores of 15.500 and 15.250, respectively. Jaciuk also had a great meet, as he was the champion of the parallel bars with a score of 15.300 and co-champion of the still rings with a score of 14.850.
About the Winter Cup
The Winter Cup is an annual event to help determine the 15 gymnasts who will comprise the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team. Mannon and Jaciuk qualified to compete in the event when they competed this summer in the P&G Gymnastics Championships.
Gophers In the National Rankings
After scoring big on the road, the Gophers moved up a spot in the national rankings to become No. 5 in this week's GymInfo national rankings. The Gophers also advanced to the same spot in the coaches poll.
In team events, the Gophers are ranked third on floor exercise (74.133), fourth in a three-way tie on vault (73.917), fifth on parallel bars (72.700) and seventh on pommel horse (71.133), still rings (73.750) and high bar (71.817).
This is the Gophers' highest ranking on the high bar, moving up two places from last week.
For individuals, junior Sean Bauer is ranked ninth on floor exercise (15.200), Mannon is ranked third on pommel horse (15.233), senior Zack Chase is ranked eighth on vault (15.067), senior Matt Frey is ranked sixth on parallel bars (15.083), and junior captain Steve Jaciuk is one spot below Frey on parallel bars at seventh (15.067).
After the Winter Cup, Jaciuk and Mannon will rejoin their teammates and prepare to travel to Penn State to face the No. 7 Nittany Lions. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 1.
After Penn State, the Gophers host their final home meet of the season at the Sports Pavilion. Minnesota hosts Iowa and Brockport at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 8.
