The Gophers open the 2018 regular season with a trip to the 48th annual Windy City Invitational Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is hosting the meet at its original home and one-time location: Navy Pier. The Maroon and Gold will also compete against Big Ten foes Illinois, Iowa and Michigan.
Minnesota starts the season ranked No. 4 in the preseason NCAA Men's Gymnastics Poll and No. 2 in the Big Ten Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Gophers took fourth place at last year's Windy City. Yaroslav Pochinka had the best finish of the day for any Gopher with a 14.650 on vault. Tristan Duran finished fifth on high bar with a 14.050.
Minnesota held the annual Alumni Meet last weekend. Pochinka won the vault with a 14.800. Freshman Shane Wiskus took home the floor title with a 14.400. Joel Gagnon followed closely in second with a 14.300. Justin Karstadt posted a 13.700 on pommel horse for a second place finish.
The Gophers return one of the most experienced squads in the country with 10 seniors on the roster. They return three All-Americans from last year in Vitali Kan (vault), Tristan Duran (parallel bars and high bar) and Jalon Stephens (high bar) and 2017 Big Ten floor champion Alex Wittenberg. Wittenberg along with Gagnon are this year's captains.
On top of plenty of experience coming back the Gophers also add in a mix of four talented freshmen. Colton Dee, Russell Johnson, Henry Meeker and Wiskus all have potential to make an instant impact. Wiskus won the all-around at December's Maroon and Gold meet.
After a week off the Gophers will host Iowa for their home opener on Jan. 27. The meet is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
