Minnesota is Iowa-bound this weekend for a date with the Hawkeyes, but the team won’t be at full strength as three Gophers – Ellis Mannon, Zack Chase and Daniel DiBenedetto – are competing at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas.
While Mannon and Chase were fighting the flu, DiBenedetto flourished. The freshman soared to a 14.200 on the high bar to place fourth in the event. DiBenedetto also competed on the pommel horse (11.550) and parallel bars (12.250). DiBenedetto will compete in the second day of competition on Feb. 9 in all three events and will have an opportunity to make the national team.
Mannon and Chase, sapped by illness, failed to advance to the second day of competition. Mannon participated on the pommel horse (12.200) and parallel bars (10.800), while Chase competed in still rings (12.350) and vault (13.750).
