Matt Anderson and Justin Smith are placed 19th and 23rd, respectively, after the opening day of the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic. The event is being held at the par 71, 6,781-yard El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas. The two Golden Gophers were invited to compete against 22 other 2002 PING All-American golfers.
Matt Anderson (Edina, Minn./Edina) struggled in the first round, carding a 9-over 80, but came back in the second with a 73 (+2) to sit tied for 19th at 153. Justin Smith (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) shot rounds of 79 and 76 for a 155 (+13). Leading the event is Adam Rubinson of TCU with a total of 3-under-par 139.
The All-America Golf Classic will conclude tomorrow.
