Will Grevlos (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Lincoln Johnson (Chaska, Minn.) and Harry Plowman-Ollington (Surrey, England) have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI) to join the University of Minnesota men’s golf program. The trio will be freshmen for the Golden Gophers in 2018-19.
“We had so much fun recruiting these three talented players from great families,” director of golf John Carlson said. “Our 2018 class will continue the raise the bar at Gopher golf, both athletically and academically.”
Grevlos was this year’s SDGA State Junior champion with rounds of 71 and 67. He is a five-time state junior champion and holds the SDGA Junior Tour’s scoring record (8-under 64). Grevlos is also a two-time high school state champion, capturing team and individual Class AA titles with Washington High School in 2016. He set a state record with his eight-stroke victory after carding two rounds of 69. Grevlos is a five-time SDSHAA All-State honoree. He has notched tournament victories in nine different states and has four top-15 AJGA finishes, including two top-five showings.
“Will brings in a style of game that we will all enjoy seeing compete regularly,” associate head coach Justin Smith said. “He is a great shot maker who has been tested at the highest levels of junior golf and high school golf. He is one of the most decorated juniors in the Midwest and we welcome him and his family to gopher golf.”
Johnson earned MSHSL All-State recognition in 2017 and tied for fourth at the Class AAA state tournament. His season scoring average of 73.0 as a junior was the second-lowest in Chaska High School history, behind only former Gopher standout Jon DuToit. Johnson is a four-time All-West Metro Conference honoree and five-time letterwinner. Johnson qualified for both of the last two U.S. Junior Amateur Championships, earning medalist honors with a 6-under round at 2017 qualifying. Johnson also notched a pair of top-five finishes in FCWT tournaments including a runner-up. In the classroom, he has maintained 3.5 GPA.
“As a top player in Minnesota, Lincoln possesses all the skills and intangibles to be the next great Minnesota collegiate player,” Smith said. “His passion to be a Gopher is so infectious and we are so excited to welcome him and his family to Gopher golf. We are looking forward to seeing the immediate impact he will make on the course, in the classroom and in the community.”
In coming to Minnesota, Plowman-Ollington joins Surrey Golf teammate Angus Flanagan, currently a freshman for the Gophers. Ollington is a member of Surrey’s men’s league-winning team and U18 team. He was also a runner-up in the U18 league. Ollington placed 10th at the Carris Trophy, the England boys’ U18 stroke play championship, to go along with an individual win at the HMC Singles, individual second-place finish and team win at ISGA Nationals, sixth place at the Berkhamsted Trophy and seventh place at the South of England Boys’ Open. Ollington also played in the British Boys’ Round of 64. Academically, he achieved the highest possible grade on his exams this fall and received a highest attainment award for Japanese from his school.
“We are thrilled to welcome Harry and his family to Minnesota,” Smith said. “Harry will provide our program with another elite presence from the Surrey, England area. He will bring to Minnesota an impressive international resume that will allow our program to compete at the highest level. There is no doubt that Harry has all the qualities to be the next great gopher golfer from England.”
