Gophers Fall Rewind
Nov. 2, 2017

The Gophers currently have a break from competition until February. Here’s a look at what they did during the fall season that wrapped up in late October.

Gophers Open with Gopher Invitational
The Gophers opened the fall season with the 13th annual Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Course. The field was strong, with 16 teams competing, including reigning national champion Oklahoma and seven other teams who competed at the 2017 NCAA Championships. The Gophers placed 12th, with senior Riley Johnson leading the team in a tie for 22nd.

Deep in the Heart of Texas
The Gophers concluded their fall season with their best finish of the year at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas. The team finished third, with Johnson and Thomas Longbella finishing in the top 20. Longbella tied for ninth, his best finish since last year’s Royal Oaks. Johnson tied his career-best round of 67.

Flanagan Finds Freshman Success
Freshman Angus Flanagan led the team with a 71.75 stroke average in the fall. He also led the team with six rounds below par. Flanagan competed in all four tournaments, setting multiple bests of his young career at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. He led the team with a season-best fifth-place finish, as well as a season-best round of 69, 4-under par finish and 54-hole score of 212.

Gophers in the Top 20
The Golden Gophers had five individual top-20 finishes at team tournaments this fall, including four top-10 finishes. Angus Flanagan had the Gophers best finish, fifth at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, while junior Peter Jones took home a team-high two top-10 finishes. Jones tied for sixth at the Maui Jim and tied for 10th at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. He has lowered his scoring average by more than two strokes from last season, at 72.67. Johnson and Longbella each took a top-20 finish home at Royal Oaks as Longbella tied for ninth and Johnson tied for 12th.

Carlson and Smith Take on New Roles
Head coach John Carlson and assistant coach Justin Smith will serve in new roles in the men’s golf program, as of Oct. 30. Carlson, after six-plus seasons as head coach, is now the director of men’s golf. Smith, a former Gophers star, is associate head coach.

Alex Uloth Finds First
Senior Alex Uloth collected his first win as a Gopher at the St. John’s Fall Invitational, playing as an individual. He also had a career-best round of 71 and 1-over finish.
