Minnesota dropped its opening-round match at the Callaway Match Play Championship Sunday, falling to No. 4-seed UCLA, 2-1-2.
Senior Clayton Rask posted the Gophers’ only victory of the first round, defeating Craig Leslie 3 and 2. Senior Andy Paulson halved his match with Erik Flores, as did sophomore Ben Pisani with Jason Kang.
UCLA squared the match as Phillip Francis defeated Minnesota sophomore Justin Kaplan, 4 and 2. A 3 and 2 victory by Kevin Chappel over junior Victor Almstrom then clinched the match for the Bruins.
Minnesota’s second contest of the day vs. Oklahoma State in the consolation bracket was halted by darkness with the match all square at 2-2-1 with just a handful of holes left to play.
OSU’s Rickie Fowler defeated Paulson 5 and 3 in the only match that was concluded before play was stopped. Rask led Trent Leon, 2 up, through 16 holes, while Pisani led Mark Johnson, 2 up, after 17. Minnesota sophomore Thomas Campbell was all square through 16 holes with his opponent, Jon McLean, while Almstrom trailed Trent Whitekiller by two through 15 holes in his match.
