Led by seniors Clayton Rask and Andy Paulson, the Minnesota men’s golf team fired a two-round total of 15-over par 591 at the par 72, 7,471-yards Chambers Bay Golf Course in Tacoma, Wash., Sunday and is in third place after the opening day of play at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge.

The Golden Gophers are 10 strokes behind tournament leader UCLA, which shot a combined 5-over 581 to lead the eight-team field. The Bruins also boast the tournament’s individual leader in Kevin Chappell, who finished up at 5-under 139.

Paulson carded rounds of 75 and 71, while Rask shot a pair of 73s to lead Minnesota. Both players head into Monday’s third and final round tied for sixth at 2-over 146.

Sophomore Ben Pisani is also in the top 10 through 36 holes after firing rounds of 73 and 75 and is tied for seventh at 4-over 138, while junior Victor Almstrom is tied for 20th. He contributed rounds of 75 and 76 for a two-round total of 7-over 151.

The Gophers will be paired with Washington during Monday’s final round, which tees off at 10 a.m. (CDT). Fans interested in following the action may do so by logging on to www.golfstat.com for live scoring and results.
