isThe 13th-ranked University of Minnesota men's golf team is in ninth place after the first day of the Pepperdine Strata Intercollegiate at the Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif. The 12-team event is hosted by Pepperdine University.

Freshman Joe Affrunti of Crystal, Ill., leads the Golden Gophers individually after firing rounds of even-par 71 and three-over par 74. Affrunti is tied for fifth place in the individual portion of the tournament.

Texas A&M leads the team standings with a three-stroke lead over host Pepperdine heading into tomorrow's final round. Although in ninth place, the Golden Gophers are just nine shots behind Oregon and UC-Santa Barbara, who are tied for third place.

Scott Piercy of San Diego State, Sean Gilliland of Texas A&M, and John Pitt of Vanderbilt lead all individuals after all fired even par totals of 142.

The tournament concludes with an 18-hole round on Tuesday morning.
