standThe University of Minnesota men's golf team shot an opening day two- round score of 571 to claim second place at the Adams Cup of Newport Golf Tournament in Narragansett, R.I. The Golden Gophers stand 11-over par, 10 shots behind the University of New Mexico. Gold Country shot a 287 in the first round and followed with a 284.
Sophomore Justin Smith is just one off the pace shooting rounds of 71 and 67 to end the first day at two-under par. Golden Gopher All- Americans Simon Nash and Wilhelm Schauman are in the hunt as well. Nash stands in tenth place at two over with rounds of 74 and 68, while Schauman is a shot back tied for 11th with rounds of 68 and 75. Schauman was tied for second after the initial round.
The Adams Cup, hosted by the University of Rhode Island at the par 70, 6,647 yard Point Judith Country Club, will conclude tomorrow with the championship round starting at 8 a.m.
