InvThe University of Minnesota men's team shot a final round of 14-over 298 to total 915 (+63) to open their 2003-04 season with a tie for ninth place with Kent State at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational on Saturday. The Golden Gophers finished 29 strokes back from event champion UCLA with a score of 886. The Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational was held at the par 71, 7,255-yard Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Senior Justin Smith (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) was the top-finisher for Minnesota, tying for fourth place at 222 (+9) after carding a final round of 6-over 77. Freshman Bronson La'Cassie (Brisbane, Australia/Kelvin Grove High) fired a 73 (+1) to move up to a tie for 38th at 230 (+17). Senior David Morgan (Rochester, Minn./Robert L. Stevenson) completed the event with a round of 75 to total 232 (+19) and tie for 46th place. Freshman Clayton Rask (Otsego, Minn./Elk River) tied for 49th at 234 (+21), and sophomore Peter Anderson (Edina, Minn./Edina) tied for 54th place at 235.

The Golden Gophers will next compete September 29-30 at the Newport Cup in Providence, R.I.
