ADAMS CUP OF NEWPORT: After opening the 2008-09 season by hosting the Gopher Invitational the Gophers will now have to take to the road as they will be part of the 15th Annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic in Rhode Island. The 15-team tournament field includes 16 teams from 11 different states and the District of Columbia. The field is as follows: Akron, Brown, Connecticut, Francis Marion, Furman, George Washington, Hartford, Marshall, Minnesota, Navy, New Mexico State, Rhode Island, Southern Mississippi, Saint Joseph’s, Temple and Texas A&M.
The Adams Cup will be played at the Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club, a par-72, 7,244-yard course designed by legendary course architect Arthur Hills.
GOPHER INVITATIONAL RECAP: The University of Minnesota men's golf team tied for sixth place at the fourth annual Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata. The Gophers shot their top score of the event, a 6-over 294, in the final round. Junior Ben Pisani led the Gophers, tying for eighth place with a 3-over 219. He shot three consecutive 1-over scores of 73 during the 54-hole event. Texas and LSU tied for the team championship with scores of 872 (+8).
Senior Victor Almstrom tied for 11th overall at 4-over 220 after a final round 74. Almstrom was in position for top 10 finish but bogeyed two of his final three holes to place 11th.
Senior Andy Paulson placed in a tie for 20th overall (+7, 223) after a final round 74. Freshman Derek Chang posted his top round of the tournament with a 73 and finished in a tie for 32nd at +9. Senior Yu Katayama rounded out the Gopher lineup in a tie for 55th (+21, 237).
Among the Gophers competing as individuals, sophomore Cameron White tied for 20th with a score of 223 (+7). He shot a final round 76. Senior Patrick Datz was unable to match his second round 69 and fell to a tie for 20th after a final round 81. Junior Thomas Campbell placed in a tie for 49th at +17 (233) after a final round 85 and junior Justin Kaplan managed a 59th place finish (239) with a final round 80. Sophomore Alexander Culverwell was forced to withdraw after suffering a back injury.
THE GOPHERS: Minnesota’s lineup will not change much from the Gopher Invite. Seniors Victor Almstrom and Yu Katayama along with junior Ben Pisani and freshman Derek Chang will be joined this week by junior Thomas Campbell.
UP NEXTt: The Gophers will take a week off before heading to South Bend, Indiana to take part in the Fighting Irish Invitational on Oct. 6-7. The event will be played at the University of Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course. The par 71, 7,020 yard course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.
