MinnesoGolden Gopher sophomore Wilhelm Schauman of Djursholm, Sweden fired back-to-back rounds of one-under par 71 on Monday to lead the University of Minnesota to a third-place standing after 36 holes of the 12-team PSINet Collegiate Invitational at Dellwood Hills Golf Club in Dellwood, Minn. Schauman is tied for the individual lead with Purdue's Lee Williamson at two-under par 142.
Virginia Tech and Purdue are tied for the team lead with two round totals of 14-over par 590. The Golden Gophers are just three strokes behind at 17-over par 593. The Hokies, Boilermakers, and Golden Gophers will tee off at 8:50 a.m. in tomorrow's final threesome pairing.
The Hokies have a pair of players tied for fourth individually, Johnson Wagner and Brian Krusoe, at three-over par 147. Alabama's Jan Are Larsen carded the low round of the day, firing a four-under par 68 in the afternoon round to lead the Crimson Tide to a fourth-place standing, heading into Tuesday's final round. Alabama is 12 strokes behind the Golden Gophers and 15 shots off the pace set by frontrunners Virginia Tech and Purdue.
Schauman's steady day of play included 26 pars and six birdies, much of which came under very windy conditions during the morning round. Sophomore David Morgan of Rochester, Minn., in his first collegiate event, is in sixth place individually following an even-par round of 72 and a four-over par score of 76 in the afternoon round. Sophomore Ben Meyers of Frankston, Victoria, Australia shot 77-74-151 and is in 15th place individually.
Tuesday's final round begins at 7:50 a.m., with the Golden Gophers first player teeing off at 8:50 a.m.
