The University of Minnesota men’s golf team has announced its 2014-15 competition schedule. The 2014 Big Ten champions are scheduled to play in 11 events before the conference tournament.
The Golden Gophers will open fall competition by hosting the 10th annual Gopher Invitational Sept. 7-8. For the second year, the tournament will take place at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minnesota. The 15-team field will feature seven schools, including Minnesota, that made NCAA Regional appearances in 2014.
Northwestern’s Windon Memorial Classic and New Mexico’s William H. Tucker Intercollegiate will close out the Gophers’ September. They will play at Cal’s Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Baylor’s Royal Oaks Intercollegiate to conclude the fall schedule in October.
The spring portion of the season will begin Feb. 15-16 with the Big Ten Match Play at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Up next, a trip to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, will highlight Minnesota’s spring schedule. Purdue’s Puerto Rico Classic runs Feb. 22-24.
Minnesota will also play in Long Beach State’s Del Walker Classic, the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford, the ASU Thunderbird Invitational and the Hawkeye Invitational.
If the Gophers repeat as Big Ten champions, they will do so at a new venue. After three years at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Indiana, the conference tournament is moving to Victoria National in Newburgh, Indiana (April 24-26).
NCAA Regionals will begin May 14-16 at six sites. The NCAA Championships start May 22 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida.
Big Ten Coach of the Year John Carlson enters his fourth season at the helm of the Gophers' program. 2014 Big Ten medalist Jose Mendez is back for his sophomore season. Senior Tyler Lowenstein, junior Jon DuToit and sophomores Matt Rachey and Grady Meyer also return with experience.
