Gophers Announce 2013-14 Schedule
July 26, 2013
Head coach John Carlson has announced the Golden Gopher men’s golf schedule for the 2013-14 season.
Minnesota will start its fall season by hosting the ninth annual Gopher Invitational Sept. 8-9. For the first time, the tournament will take place at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
This year’s field includes both the team and individual champions from the 2012 Invitational. California took last year’s team title, while Kent State’s Corey Conners took medalist honors. Baylor, Central Arkansas, Iowa State, Michigan State, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Penn State, St. John’s (Minn.) and Toledo complete the 12-team field.
Later in the month, the Gophers will travel to Indiana’s Wolf Run Intercollegiate (Sept. 21-22) and New Mexico’s Tucker Invitational (Sept. 27-28). Then-senior Erik Van Rooyen finished second to lead the team to a tie for fourth at last year’s Tucker.
In October, Minnesota will play in California’s Alister Mackenzie Classic (Oct. 14-15) and Seton Hall’s Barnabas Health Collegiate (Oct. 20-21).
The team will wrap up the fall season at the three-day Wendy’s Kiawah Invitational (Nov. 3-5), hosted by Charleston Southern.
Big Ten Match Play (Feb. 14-15) will again be held in Bradenton, Fla., to lead off the Gophers’ spring season. Minnesota went 1-2 at last year’s event. The Gophers will then play at Long Beach State’s Del Walker Classic (March 3-4) for their first stroke play tournament of the spring.
Oregon’s Duck Classic (March 24-25), Iowa’s Hawkeye Invitational (April 19-20) and Penn State’s Rutherford Intercollegiate (April 19-20) will close out the regular season. Minnesota tied for third at both the Hawkeye and Rutherford tournaments in 2013.
The Big Ten Championships will be in French Lick, Ind., May 2-4. The Gophers’ second-place finish last year was their best since 2009, when they also finished second. Erik Van Rooyen (tie for second) and returning sophomore Jon DuToit (tie for eighth) made the All-Championships roster. Robert Bell (12th) and returning senior Jon Trasamar (t-17th) also scored.
The NCAA Regionals will take place at six sites May 16-18, with the NCAA Championships set for May 27-June 1 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Wichita, Kan.
