University of Minnesota senior golfer Clayton Rask won his first round match at the United States Amateur Public Links Championship in Wheaton, Ill. Rask defeated Alan Hill of Spring Branch, Texas 2 & 1 to advance to Thursday's second round. Rask will take on Michael Bielawski of West Allis, Wis.
After finishing second in the strokeplay portion of the event with a two-round total of 3-under 141, Rask advanced to the round of 32 yesterday with a solid back nine against Hill. The match was all square through the par 5, 11th hole before Rask rattled off three straight wins on holes 12 through 14. HIll bogeyed the par 4 12th and the par 3 13th to give Rask a 2 up lead through 13. Rask came back with a birdie on the par 5, 14th and went 3 up with only four holes left. Hill promptly birdied the 15th hole to slice into the deficit, but the 16th and 17th holes were halved to give Rask the victory 2 & 1.
