Jose Mendez has been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America’s All-Freshman Team. He is one of just five freshmen in Division I to make the list.
Mendez was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and selected to the All-Big Ten First Team after tying for medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships. He was the first freshman Big Ten champion since 2009. Mendez recently received PING All-Region honors after tying for ninth place at the NCAA Raleigh Regional.
In a season that included three individual tournament wins, Mendez held a stroke average of 71.97, which ranks third in program history for a single season. His average during Minnesota’s six spring tournaments was 70.74.
“This is a well-deserved honor for his outstanding freshman year that included three victories,” head coach John Carlson said. “The first-team selections are all a very deserving group. Jose has a bright future ahead of him as a Gopher.”
