Jose Mendez has been named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team. The freshman from San Jose, Costa Rica, led the Gophers in their Big Ten championship and NCAA Regional appearance.

Mendez tied for ninth place at the NCAA Raleigh Regional last weekend. He was also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and selected to the All-Big Ten First Team after tying for medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships.

In a season that included three individual tournament wins, Mendez held a stroke average of 71.97, which ranks third in program history for a single season. His average during Minnesota’s six spring tournaments was 70.74.

The last Gopher to received PING All-Region acclaim was Erik Van Rooyen last year.
