BolstadNorthwestern fired a final round score of two-under par 282 to overtake third-round leader Minnesota and capture the 1999 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships Sunday at University of Minnesota/Les Bolstad Golf Course in Lauderdale, Minn. The Wildcats finished the tournament with a five-under par total of 1131, three strokes ahead of the Golden Gophers.
Michael Harris of Michigan and Larry Nuger of Illinois tied for individual honors, each carding 72-hole totals of six-under par 278. C.J. Brock of Wisconsin was two shots back, with Luke Donald of Northwestern and Martin LeMesurier of Minnesota tied for fifth at three- under par 281.
"I was pleased with the way I rallied from a poor start (Harris was three-over par on the front nine Sunday)," said co-medalist Harris.
"I knew if I played well, I could have a chance to win," said Nuger. "It gave me confidence knowing my game was up there with the other great players in this conference."
The team championship was Northwestern's first since 1948. Donald's 67 tied him with Brock for the day's low round.
"It feels great -- we've worked for this since the beginning of the season," said Northwestern Head Coach Pat Goss. "It does wonders for our program and our confidence heading into the regionals next week and hopefully the NCAA Championships.
"We really had three keys today -- Luke Donald played a great round today. We weren't going to win without him shooting a score like he did. I was also impressed with the play of Jess Daley and David Shaffer. This was a real team effort all weekend."
The tournament was delayed two times on Sunday because of weather. The start of Sunday's final round was pushed back one-half hour because of an early-morning rain shower, and the round was again delayed one and one-half hours due to thunderstorms in the Minneapolis area.
Wisconsin fired the day's best team round, a three- under par total of 281, to climb into fourth place in the final team standings. Illinois finished in third place, 18 strokes behind pacesetter Northwestern.
