Northwestern University holds a slim one-shot lead with a team score of 565 after 36 holes of play in the first day of the Big Ten Men's Golf Championships at University of Minnesota/Les Bolstad Golf Course in Lauderdale, Minn. Minnesota is in second place with a total of 566 and is a comfortable 10-strokes ahead of third-place Michigan State and Iowa.

"The big thing for us is to be in this position and hold on to it" said Northwestern's Head Coach Pat Goss. "Minnesota is so good that it is phenomenal for us to be in this position. We have to stay in range to have a chance to win on the last day."

Defending NCAA Champion James McLean is in third place with a 138, one stroke behind Larry Nuger of Illinois and Matt Stutzman of Iowa. McLean shot a 72 in the first round and fired back the low score of the day, 66, in the second round.

"I started off slow and built up my game during the day," said McLean. "My short game scored for me today. My game wasn't as solid as it has been, but my short game was excellent. I could afford to miss greens because I'd get so close to the hole."

Senior Adam Dooley and junior Martin LeMesurier are tied for eight place after both scoring rounds of 142. Senior Jeff Barney is tied at 144 with five other golfers. Minnesota started the day sluggish with just one man, LeMesurier, shooting under par. He fired a 70, one-under par.

The third round will be played tomorrow. Eighteen holes will be played on Sunday to round out the tournament. Bill Thompson will be the first Golden Gopher to tee off tomorrow from hole No. 1 at 10:20 a.m. McLean will also tee off from hole No. 1 at 10:52 a.m.
