roThe 33rd-ranked University of Minnesota men's golf team moved up a spot to fourth place in the team standings of the 2001 Big Ten Championships after the second of three days of competition, firing rounds of 291 and 286 for a 54-hole total of 868. The Golden Gophers stand 15 strokes behind two-time defending champion Northwestern in the 72-hole tournament, held at the par 72, 7,118-yard Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Ill.

Freshman Simon Nash leads the Maroon and Gold in a three-way tie for fifth place, behind a third-round, season-low 68 for a two-day total of 214 (-2). Rounding out the Minnesota results are sophomore Wilhelm Schauman in a tie for 11th at an even 216, sophomore Joe Afffrunti in 16th at 217, sophomore Ben Meyers in 32nd at 222 and freshman Justin Smith in 47th at 229. Defending champion Luke Donald of Northwestern shot a course-record 65 in the second round to vault to the top of the leaderboard with an eight-under 208. Ohio State's Mike Austin stands a shot behind Donald at 209.

In the team competition, Northwestern registered rounds of 280 and 284 to move into first place with an 11-under 853. The Wildcats are followed by Purdue at 854, Ohio State at 860, Minnesota at 868 and first-round leader Michigan State at 871.
