The Golden Gophers travel to Iowa City, Iowa for the 2002 Big Ten Golf hampionships at Finkbine Golf Course. Minnesota comes into the tournament ranked #23 by Golfweek, two spots behind Purdue at #21 and four spots ahead of Michigan State at #27. Last week, Minnesota finished in fourth place at the Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. Junior Matt Anderson finished in fourth place with a 3-over-par 219.It was Anderson's highest finish of his career.
Last Week
The Golden Gophers shot a final round 297 to remain in fourth place at the Fossum Invitational. Minnesota fired rounds of 298-301-297896 despite windy and cold conditions to finish 20 shots behind first-place Toledo. The event was held at the par 72 ,7,003-yard Forest Akers Country Club in East Lansing,Mich.
The top Minnesota golfer was junior Matt Anderson, who carded a team-best 73 in the final round to finish fourth. Anderson shot rounds of 74- 72-73 =219 to end at 3-over-par and record a career-best finish. Junior Wilhelm Schauman tied for 15th place after shooting a 76 Sunday for a tournament score of 224 (+8). Sophomore Justin Smith remained tied for 29th place with a total of 227 (+11), while fellow classmates Simon Nash and David Morgan moved up on the final day. Nash climbed four places to tie for 34th at 228 (+12) and Morgan rose three places to finish tied for 40th at 230 (+14).
All-Time Titles
The Golden Gophers have won four Big Ten team titles -1929, 1938, 1963 and 1972. Six golfers have won Big Ten Individual titles with Les Bolstad being the lone Gopher to win two individual cham- pionships in 1927 and '29. Other individual win- ners include James Teale in 1943; Bill Brask in 1968; Dave Haberle in 1971; Jim Bergeson in 1972 and John Harris in 1974.
