eThe 33rd-ranked University of Minnesota men's golf team closed out its regular season schedule at the 2001 Bruce Fossum/TeamGearOnline.com Invitational with a second-place finish, ending the 54-hole event with a nine-over team score of 861. Sophomore Wilhelm Schauman performed brilliantly to the tune of a second-place finish with a six-under 207 on the par 71 , 6,900-yard trak at Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Michigan.

The Golden Gophers placed three of their five competitors in the top 25 to move from third place after day one into the runner-up spot. Minnesota fired a final round 287 to finish 10 strokes behind tournament champion Northwestern. The Wildcats placed three golfers in the top 10 and captured the team title with a one-under 851. Host Michigan State finished third with an 11-over 863. Minnesota's second-place finish was the Golden Gophers' best finish during the spring season.

Schauman, the 50th-ranked collegiate golfer in the country, fired a final-round 70 to finish second to sixth-ranked Luke Donald of Northwestern who ended the event with an eight-under 205. Rounding out the Maroon and Gold results were Justin Smith at 219 (+6), Simon Nash at 220 (+7), Ben Meyers at 221 (+8) and Joe Affrunti at 223 (+10).

The Golden Gophers travel to Champaign, Ill., for the 2001 Big Ten Championships on May 4-6, 2001.
