Inclement weather forced the suspension of play Saturday morning in the second round of the Administaff Augusta State Invitational at Champions Retreat Golf Club.
Rain halted play at 10:44 a.m. with all 90 players on the course. After nearly a four-hour delay, tournament officials announced the decision to suspend play for the day due to unplayable course conditions. The second round will resume at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and the tournament, originally a 54-hole event, will be considered official after the completion of the second round, making it a 36-hole event.
In a field that includes six of the top 10 and 12 of the nation’s top 40 teams, East Tennessee State’s Gareth Shaw birdied the third hole to move to four-under par for the tournament and take a one-shot lead over UCLA’s Lucas Lee and North Carolina’s Chase McFarland.
UCLA leads No. 33 North Carolina by two shots and is three shots clear of No. 7 Georgia Tech and 22nd-ranked Lamar. Georgia, the top-ranked team in the field at No. 2, is in fifth place -- six shots off the pace -- while North Carolina State, coming off its recent win in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, is tied for sixth with Clemson.
