University of Minnesota senior Josh Persons and freshman Victor Almstrom were named Co-Big Ten Golfers of the Week today by the conference office. Persons and Almstrom tied for seventh last weekend at the Augusta State Invitational each at 1-under-par 215. It is the first Player of the Week honor for each player and the second in as many weeks for the Gopher Golf program.
Almstrom, a native from Valingby, Sweden, fired rounds of 71-71-73 to record the first top-10 finish of his collegiate career. The three-round score also was a career low. Six of Almstrom’s last 10 rounds have been at or below par this spring.
Persons, from Fargo, N.D., posted his third top-10 finish of the year and second of the spring season. Persons fired a first round 68, his second straight round in the 60s, and concluded with rounds of 73 and 74 to finish tied for seventh in one of the top fields of the year. Ten of the 15 teams in the field were ranked among the Golfweek/Sagarin top 60.
The 16th-ranked Gophers continue their spring season this weekend at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. Minnesota travels to the Big Ten Championships at the end of the month on April 28-30, at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.
