The University of Minnesota men's golf team is three shots off the lead after combining to shoot an opening round 5-over par 293 Sunday at the Pinehurst Invitational in North Carolina.

Senior Victor Almstrom paced the Gophers on Sunday with an even-par round of 72 and is a nine-player tie for eighth place. Sophomore Ben Pisani opened with a 1-over par 73 and is in a tie for 17th place while freshman Derek Chang and junior Thomas Campbell both carded 2-over par rounds of 74 and are in a tie for 26th. Sophomore Cameron White added a 5-over 77.

The Gophers are chasing Virginia Tech and Penn State, who are tied for the team lead at 2-over par 290. The Nittany Lions’ Tommy McDonagh and Nathan Sutherland of Miami of Ohio share medalist honors after day one.
