GopBehind sophomore Wilhelm Schauman's final round five-under 67 and strong performances from the other four Minnesota golfers, the 22nd-ranked Golden Gophers surged into third place on the final day of competition at the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club in Palmer, P.R. With his impressive final-round shooting, Schauman finished in second place with a six-under 210 in the 54-hole event. Clemson's Lucas Glover led from wire-to-wire and won the tournament with an 11-under 205.

Four of the five Maroon and Gold golfers turned in scores at- or under-par 72 to vault the Golden Gophers from fourth to third place. In addition to Schauman's 67, Gold Country was paced by Simon Nash's 72, Zach Faulds' 70 and Justin Smith's 71. Ben Meyers came into the final round tied for fourth place with Schauman, but fired a final-round 80 to finish in a tie for 31st.

Minnesota finished with a combined team score of 865, four shots behind third-ranked Georgia Tech who captured the team title with a three-under 861. Second-ranked Clemson finished second, one shot behind the Yellow Jackets at 862. Top-ranked Georgia fell to fourth with a final-round 290. The Golden Gophers' final-day 280 was the lowest team score of the tournament.

The Maroon and Gold has now finished in the top three in four of its past five tournaments, including two wins during the fall season. Minnesota next competes at the Southwestern Intercollegiate in Westlake Village, Calif., on March 5.
