The University of Minnesota men's golf team struggled to a final round team score of 15-over par 303 on Tuesday morning to finish in eighth place in the 18- team San Juan Shootout at the River Course at Rio Mar Country Club in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Clemson University claimed the team title with a final team score of 34-under par 830. Georgia Tech finished second at 30-under par 834. No other team scored better than six-under par, 24 shots behind the Yellow Jackets. The Golden Gophers finished better than the only other Big Ten schools, Northwestern, Purdue, and Penn State, at the event.
Minnesota had been idle from competition before this tournament since participating in the Missouri Bluffs Intercollegiate on Oct. 10-12, 1998.
Clemson's John Engler and East Tennessee State's David Christensen tied for individual medalist honors with 11-under par scores of 205 in the 54-hole event. Minnesota's highest finisher was senior Adam Dooley with a one-over par 217, good for a tie for 24th overall.
The Golden Gophers will be back in action at the Golf Digest Invitational on March 13-14 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
