The Gophers are in eighth place overall after two rounds of play at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in South Bend, Ind. Minnesota shot a combined score of 293 on Monday, bringing the team overall total to 589.
Gopher senior Erik Van Rooyen will head into Tuesday's final round in contention for another top finish, thanks to an even-round card of 71 in the second round. Van Rooyen's 36-hole score of 144 puts him into a tie for 10th place, just five shots off the lead. He is looking to secure his seventh-career top-10 collegiate finish.
Fellow senior David Haley Jr. moved 10 spots up the leaderboard Monday following his one-over par round of 72. He will begin play on Tuesday in a tie for 24th place with a score of 147. Freshman Jon DuToit is in a tie for 36th place followed by junior Alex Gaugert and senior Robert Bell in a tie for 65th and 67th place, respectively.
Michigan State leads the field with a 36-hole score of 569, seven shots ahead of second place UNC Wilmington (576). San Francisco (577), Houston (579) and Xavier (586) round out the top five. Wilmington's Thomas Bass is the current medalist with a 36-hole score of three-under par 139. Bass is one of only three players to sit under par through two rounds.
