The University of Minnesota golf team fought the weather and 13 other teams in the first round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic and will head into Monday’s second round in tie for seventh place with a combined card of 296.

Monday’s second round is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. from Warren Golf Club in South Bend, Ind. The entire tournament can be followed live on golfstat.com.

Senior Erik Van Rooyen, the reigning Big Ten Conference Player of the Week, opened with a two-over par 73, as did freshman Jon DuToit. Both players are tied for 17th place, four shots off the lead. Van Rooyen and DuToit are first and second, respectively, on the Gophers in stroke average on the season.

Senior’s Robert Bell and David Haley Jr. are in a tie for 34th place after each fired rounds of four-over par 75. Alex Gaugert finished with an 82 and is in a tie for 69th place.

The University of Houston and Michigan State University will begin play on Monday in a tie for first place with an 18-hole score of 287, just nine strokes ahead of Minnesota. Texas Arlington is in third place, followed by San Francisco and Toledo.

Only five players finished Sunday’s opening round under par, led by Houston’s Curtis Reed and Texas-Arlington’s Paul McConnell. The duo is tied for first thanks to opening round cards of two-under par 69.
