The Golden Gophers’ best season in recent years ended at the NCAA Raleigh Regional on Saturday. Minnesota finished ninth at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Minnesota finished at 20 over as a team.
The Gophers entered the day tied for sixth, six strokes out of fifth. Mendez was two strokes behind the top individual not on one of the top five teams. Minnesota carded a team score of 299 (+15) on the day, while Mendez shot a 2-over-par 73 to tie for ninth (-1).
Alex Gaugert was Minnesota’s next finisher, tying for 39th at 7 over. Grady Meyer shot a 74 on Saturday and tied for 63rd (+13). Both Jon DuToit and Jon Trasamar turned in rounds of 76. DuToit tied for 57th (+11) , and Trasamar (+14) tied for 67th.
Georgia Tech (-27) won the Raleigh Regional. Washington, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Florida State will also advance to the NCAA Championships. Wake Forest’s Cyrus Stewart will move on as an individual after tying for sixth at 3 under.
The 2013-14 campaign saw the Gophers make their first NCAA Regional team appearance since 2009. They won their first four tournaments since 2006-07, including their first Big Ten title since 2007. Mendez was Minnesota’s first Big Ten medalist since 2003, and received Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors after winning four tournaments. Head coach John Carlson was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.
