The University of Minnesota men’s golf team is tied for second place with UC-Santa Barbara after 36 holes at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic in Long Beach, Calif. The Golden Gophers posted a 4-under-par team score of 556, led by senior Jon Trasamar, who is tied for fourth at 4 under.
Minnesota is three strokes behind leader Cal State-Fullerton. Fullerton’s Mark Anguiano holds the individual lead, four strokes ahead of Trasamar at 8 under.
Trasamar carded a 4-under 66 in the morning round at Virginia Country Club. He made seven birdies to three bogeys. Trasamar turned in an even-par round of 70 in the afternoon.
Alex Gaugert shot a 1-under 69 in each round and is tied for seventh. The senior eagled the par-4 14th hole during the first round.
Four of five Gophers posted at least one under-par round on Monday. Jose Mendez (+1) shot a 69 in the second round that included 17 pars, and Jon DuToit (+2) shot a 68. Mendez and DuToit are tied for 20th and 22nd, respectively. Matt Rachey is tied for 39th at 6 over.
"Gaugert and Trasamar were on offense all day with nine birdies each," head coach John Carlson said. "Mendez posted a bogey-free 69 in the second round, and DuToit played true to his Minnesota State Open champion form this afternoon with a solid 68. I'm proud of the determination our coaching staff saw in our players on the course today and we have put ourselves in position to win for the second time this season."
