Minnesota men’s golf split its two matches Monday to finish seventh at the Big Ten Match Play Championship. The Golden Gophers lost 3-2 to Northwestern in the first consolation round, then went on to defeat Ohio State 3-2 in the afternoon’s seventh-place match at Hammond Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla.

Jon DuToit was the only Gopher not to lose a match, going 2-0-1 during the tournament overall. He led the whole way in his match against the Buckeyes’ Grant Weaver. Jose Mendez had the team’s most wins with a 3-1-0 record. William Leaf and Rúnar Arnórsson each nabbed a pair of victories.

Overall, nine of Minnesota's matches were won or lost 1 up. One was halved. The Gophers won one 2&1 match and lost another.

“To come away from the Big Ten Match Play with four close matches was perfect preparation for the spring season,” head coach John Carlson said. “Getting wins at the 1, 2 and 3 spots with Jose, Jon and Runar was important, and will certainly continue to be a key to the rest of our season.”

Illinois won the Big Ten Match Play. The Illini beat Michigan in the title match.

Up next on the Gophers’ schedule is a trip to the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The tournament will run Feb. 22-24.
