The University of Minnesota men’s golf team defeated top-seeded Illinois and No. 6 Indiana to finish fifth at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Bradenton, Fla., on Saturday. Jon Trasamar and Alex Gaugert both won two matches on the second day of the tournament.
Jon DuToit, Gaugert and Matt Rachey all birdied the last hole to boost the Gophers to a 3-2 win against the Illini. Gaugert won 1-up against Charlie Danielson. DuToit and Rachey both halved their matches. Trasamar won 3&2 over David Kim. Brian Campbell got the Illini’s only win, 4&3 against Jose Mendez. It was the second time in three years that the Gophers defeated top-seeded Illinois in the Big Ten Match Play
In the fifth-place match Minnesota and Indiana each won two and halved one match, but. the Gophers won on a tiebreaker. Trasamar (3&2 over Nicholas Grubnich) and Gaugert (1-up over Keegan Vea) provided the wins, while Jose Mendez halved his match against David Mills. Max Kollin and Will Seger won 1-up over Tyler Lowenstein and Matt Rachey, respectively.
Michigan won the event, defeating Purdue in the championship round.
Big Ten Network will televise a 90-minute program from this weekend's action on Sunday, March 16. The time will be determined later.
The Gophers will next travel to Long Beach, Calif., for the Del Walker Classic on March 3-4.
