The University of Minnesota men’s golf team went 1-1 on the first day of the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Bradenton, Fla. The seventh-seeded Gophers defeated No. 10 Penn State 4-1 in the first round before falling to No. 2 Purdue in the quarterfinals.
Jon Trasamar (7&5 over Chris Houston) and Jose Mendez (6&5 over JD Dornes) won by the largest margins in the Gophers’ first matchup. Jon DuToit won 3&1 over Jens Talbert, and Alex Gaugert won 1-up against Christian Elliott. Tyler Lowenstein lost a close match 1-up to Xander McDonald-Smith.
Against Purdue, Matt Rachey halved his match against Luis Fernando Barco, but the Boilermakers won the other four matches to advance to the semifinals. Adam Schenk beat Mendez 1-up in the closest Gopher loss of the match. DuToit (3&1 vs. Philippe Schweizer), Trasamar (3&2 vs. Enzo Peron) and Lowenstein (5&4 vs. Austin Eoff) lost in their second matches of the day.
Minnesota will play top-seeded Illinois in the consolation bracket Saturday morning. The Illini had a first-round bye and then lost 3-2 to No. 8 Michigan.
