All-Big Ten Defense and Special Teams // Carpenter Best In B1G // Team Awards Handed Out
Four student-athletes from the Minnesota football program on offense were recognized by the coaches and media of the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday.
Sophomore Rodney Smith and senior Jonah Pirsig were named All-Big Ten Third Team by both the coaches and media. Drew Wolitarsky received third team accolades from the media, while Shannon Brooks was named honorable mention by the coaches.
Smith led the Gophers with 1,084 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. This season he became the 20th Gopher ever to rush for 1,000 yards in a season and his 15 rushing scores is third most all-time in a single season. Through two years, he ranks tied for 24th in program history with 1,754 yards.
The Gophers were 8-1 this year when Smith scored a touchdown and his 1,477 all-purpose yards is the 15th most ever in a single season. He finished second on the team in scoring with 96 points which is the third most ever for an offensive skill player. Smith also finished second on the team in receiving with 22 catches for 187 yards.
Pirsig was Minnesota’s lone senior offensive lineman on the team he was a leader as the line worked to create a new identity this year. Jonah showed his toughness battling through injuries during the season and at right tackle he provided protection for Minnesota to pass for 2,128 yards and rush for 2,237 yards.
Wolitarsky was Minnesota’s go-to receiver all season. He caught 61 passes for 787 yards and scored five touchdowns. He has caught a pass in 25 straight games, which is tied for the sixth longest streak in school history. His 125 career catches rank ninth in program history, while his 1,676 yards place him tenth all-time.
Brooks battled injuries this season, but still rushed 125 times for 599 yards. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry and scored five touchdowns. He also added six receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown.
