Offense Release

Ten student-athletes from the Minnesota football program on defense and special teams wererecognized by the coaches and media of the Big Ten Conference on Monday. The Gophers landed four All-Big Ten Third Team selections, including two from the secondary and two on special teams.

Eric Murray was one of two Gophers to be lauded by both the coaches and the media. Murray was named to the third team all-conference as a defensive back. Murray, who was largely tasked with blanketing the opposition’s top receiving threat, recorded 64 tackles and also led the team with three forced fumbles. The senior from Milwaukee, Wis. also broke up six passes and picked off a pass against TCU in the first game of the season. This marks the third straight year Murray was named All-Big Ten as he was a second team honoree last season and honorable mention in 2013.

Peter Mortell was the other representative from Minnesota to land on the coaches and media’s all-conference third team list. Mortell, the 2014 Eddleman-Fields Big Ten Punter of the Year, ends his career as the program’s top punter ever to don the Maroon and Gold. The Green Bay, Wis. native averaged 43.9 yards per punt in his career and had 72 punts downed inside the opposition’s 20-yard line, including 26 alone this season. In 2015, Mortell netted 20 punts that traveled 50-plus yards and forced 16 fair catches.

Ryan Santoso, a Lou Groza Award semifinalist, was tabbed a Third Team All-Big Ten selection by the conference’s coaches and was named honorable mention by the media. Santoso drilled 15 of his 19 field goal attempts and went a perfect 30-for-30 on point-after attempts. The Pace, Fla. native led the team in scoring with 75 points. Santoso connected on all nine field goal tries inside 40 yards and also hit six that were over 40 yards away, including a 50-yarder against Colorado State. The redshirt sophomore also recorded 25 touchbacks on kickoffs this season.

Briean Boddy-Calhoun took third team honors from the conference’s media and was named honorable mention by the coaches in the Big Ten. Boddy-Calhoun, a first-team (media) and second-team (coaches) choice from a season ago, touted 43 total tackles and paced the defense with four turnovers (three interceptions and one fumble recovery). The redshirt senior is tied for seventh on the program’s all-time interception list with nine in his three seasons on the field for the Gophers.

Redshirt seniors De’Vondre Campbell and Theiren Cockran were named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention by both the coaches and media. Campbell ranked third on the team with 89 total tackles, including 4.5 tackles-for-loss for 21 yards, while also contributing an interception and a forced fumble. Cockran anchored the defensive line with 29 tackles, with seven coming from behind the line of scrimmage. He also recorded three sacks and broke up a pair of passes.

The league’s coaches also deemed Jalen Myrick and Steve Richardson honorable mention choices. Despite missing time due to injuries, both Myrick and Richardson caused havoc for opposing offenses. Myrick notched three interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown, and was the primary kick returner for the Gophers, averaging 21.4 yards-per-return. Richardson was second on the team with 8.0 tackles-for-loss as part of his 29 total tackles. His top game came at Colorado State where he recorded a career-best seven tackles, including three behind the line of scrimmage, broke up a pass, picked up a fumble and added a sack.

Linebackers Jack Lynn and Cody Poock rounded out the list for defensive players to be honored by the league. Both Lynn and Poock were honorable mention selections by the league’s media. Lynn played both outside and inside linebacker and finished fourth on the team with 72 tackles, including a team-high 9.5 tackles-for-loss. Poock ranked second on the team with 95 tackles on the season. The Okoboji, Iowa native contributed 4.5 tackles-for-loss and added a forced fumble in his first season as the starter for the Gophers.
