Barber Named All-Big Ten Third Team
Nov. 28, 2017

Five student-athletes from the Minnesota football program on defense and special teams were recognized by the coaches and media of the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday.

Sophomore linebacker Thomas Barber was named All-Big Ten Third Team by the media and was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection by the coaches. Rush end Carter Coughlin and defensive tackle Steven Richardson were also recognized as All-Big Ten Honorable Mention by the coaches and media. On special teams, kicker Emmit Carpenter and punter Ryan Santoso were named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention by the coaches and media.

Linebacker Jonathan Celestin was selected as Minnesota’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Barber led Minnesota with 115 tackles (ranked tied for 18th in the nation) and 76 solo stops (fifth in the nation). His 115 tackles were the most by a Gopher since Damien Wilson had 119 in 2014 and his 76 solo tackles were the most since Jack Brewer had 89 in 2001.

Coughlin led Minnesota with 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks, while also forcing one fumble. Richardson, who was double-teamed on almost every snap, made 23 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble to end his Gopher career.

Carpenter, who last year became the first Gopher ever to be named the Big Ten’s Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year, made 14-of-20 field goals this year and led Minnesota with 73 points. Santoso averaged 43.0 yards (second best average in school history for a senior) on 66 punts this season. Twenty of his punts were fair caught and 17 0f them were placed inside the 20.

Celestin, who battled an elbow injury for most of the year, finished his senior season second on the team with 78 tackles and returned an interception for 31 yards to secure a Homecoming win against Illinois.

The Big Ten’s offensive honorees are set to be announced tomorrow.
