CARTER NAMED ONE OF THREE FINALISTS FOR THE THORPE AWARD

 

defUniversity of Minnesota senior strong safety Tyrone Carter has been named one of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award which recognizes the top defensive back in college football.

New Mexico senior Brian Urlacher and Tennessee junior Deon Grant join Carter as finalists for the award. The winner will be announced at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, Dec. 9, at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. The formal presentation of the award will take place Feb. 17, 2000, in Oklahoma City.

Carter, who was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time in his illustrious career Monday after registering a season-high 16 tackles in the Golden Gophers' 25-21 win at Iowa Saturday, is also one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy which recognizes the top defensive player at any position in college football. The Nagurski Trophy winner will be announced Dec. 6 in Charlotte, N.C.
