Senior Ben Utecht has been named a semifinalist for the 2003 John Mackey Award which is given to the nation's best tight end. Finalists for the award will be selected on Wednesday, November 26 and the winner of the award will be announced on Tuesday, December 9th.
Joining Utecht as a semifinalist are Florida's Ben Troupe, Pittsburgh's Kris Wilson, Miami's Kellen Winslow II, Utah State's Chris Cooley, Virginia's Heath Miller, Nebraska's Matt Herian and Utah's Ben Moa.
A native of Hastings, Minn., Utecht ranks third on the Golden Gophers with 18 catches for 289 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games this season. He missed Minnesota's regular season finale at Iowa last Saturday due to injury.
During his career, Utecht has established himself as the school's most prolific tight end with 83 catches for 1,211 yards and 15 touchdowns. Overall, he ranks third in school history for receiving touchdowns, 10th in career receptions and 12th in career receiving yards.
The Golden Gophers (9-3, 5-3) completed their regular season last weekend at Iowa and will await the decision on their postseason bowl destination.
