The University of Minnesota has announced numerous updates to the Gophers' future non-conference football schedules. The schedules are highlighted by Minnesota and North Carolina agreeing in principle to a home-and-home series in 2013 and 2014.
The North Carolina addition to the schedule means the Gophers will be facing at least one team from a Bowl Championship Series conference each year from 2009 through at least 2014.
The additions announced today mean Minnesota's schedule is finalized for 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. The Gophers need just one more game to fill out their schedules for 2012 and 2015.
"Our upcoming non-conference schedules are very exciting for three reasons," said head football coach Tim Brewster. :First and foremost, these games are important from the standpoint of recruiting. Then, it is also exciting for our fan base and for our football team. It is inspiring for all three of those groups to play challenging non-conference schedules like we're going to play."
Addition and changes to the future schedule begin in 2010. The Gophers open next season at Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 2. Minnesota will then host South Dakota, before USC comes to town on Sept. 18. The Gophers have also added a Sept. 25 game vs. Northern Illinois at TCF Bank Stadium.
In 2011, Minnesota has announced a home game with New Mexico State (Sept. 10). That game goes along with a Sept. 3 date at USC, a Sept. 17 home game vs. Miami (Ohio) and a Sept. 24 contest with North Dakota State which were previously announced.
The New Mexico State game has a couple interesting Gopher connections. Aggies Director of Athletics Dr. McKinley Boston was a Gopher letterwinner from 1965-67. He was an All-Big Ten selection in 1967. New Mexico State head coach DeWayne Walker is also a former Gopher. He lettered in 1981.
One addition has been made to the 2012 schedule. The Gophers will host New Hampshire on Sept. 15. Minnesota opens 2012 at UNLV and will host Syracuse on Sept. 22.
The Gophers will be traveling to North Carolina for an intersectional matchup with the Tar Heels on Sept. 7, 2013. A return game with North Carolina is slated for Sept. 13, 2014. The 2014 season will open with a home game against Eastern Illinois.
Previously announced series with Oregon State and Colorado have been moved in this latest round of schedule announcements. The Big Ten schedule has been released through the 2012 season.
