The preseason accolades continue to roll in for Minnesota senior defensive tackle Steven Richardson, as he was named to preseason watch lists today for the Outland Trophy (standout interior linemen) and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (national defensive player of the year), which is named in honor of the former University of Minnesota player. Nagurski was a legendary two-way player for the Gophers and dominated college football before finding fame for the Chicago Bears in the 1930s.

It was previously announced that Richardson was on the preseason watch list for the Bednarik Award.

Richardson is one of 11 Big Ten player on the Outland list and one of 21 defensive tackles to be recognized. He is one of 16 Big Ten players on the Bronko Nagurski list and one of 19 tackles.

The Chicago native is a menacing force for the Gophers, who started 11 of 13 games last season and notched 31 tackles. Despite seeing numerous double-teams, he led the team with 11 tackles for loss and added seven sacks. Richardson, who was also named Academic All-Big Ten, was honored with All-Big Ten Third Team laurels.

For his career, Richardson has made 80 tackles (40 solo) in 36 career games. He has 25 career tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks. Richardson has also forced four career fumbles, recovered three fumbles and broke up three passes.

The Outland Trophy and Bronko Nagurski Trophy are members of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 23 awards boast over 745 years of tradition-selection excellence. Visit for more information. The members of the NCFAA are unveiling their preseason watch lists over a 12-day period this month.
