The preseason honors keep on coming for senior Ra'Shede Hageman. The defensive tackle was named to the 2013 Outland Trophy Preseason Watch List and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List today. The Outland Trophy is awarded to the nation's most outstanding interior lineman, while the Bronko Nagurski Trophy is presented to the National Defensive Player of the Year.
Hageman was named to the 2013 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List earlier this week. The award recognizes the College Defensive Player of the Year.
Hageman enters his final year of college football after a breakout junior season which saw the 6-6, 311-pound Minneapolis native record 35 tackles and six sacks.
Earlier this offseason, Hageman was named First Team Preseason All-Big 10 by Phil Steele and was placed on the Athlon Preseason All-Big Ten First Team. He was also named to the Big Ten Preseason All-Conference First Team by College Sports Madness and appointed to the Defensive Lineman Trophy Watch List by College Football Performance Awards.
Minnesota has had eight players receive national awards for their play, with Matt Spaeth winning the 2006 John Mackey Award being the most recent. Hageman would be the first Gopher to win the Bronko Nagurski Trophy or the Chuck Bednarik Award. He would be the fourth Minnesota student-athlete to award the Outland Trophy, joining Tom Brown (1960), Bobby Bell (1962) and Greg Eslinger (2005).
