Football was on dispaly again at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday, as Minnesota held its annual spring game in front of a crowd of about 5,000 fans.
The game, which featured the offense against the defense, wrapped up the Gophers' spring practice schedule when began on March 4.
The offense, adorned in gold jerseys, scored 19 points, while the white-clad defense recorded four sacks, two pass breakups and one interception.
The game's lone touchdown came on a 33-yard run by redshirt freshman Berkley Edwards, who rushed 11 times for 46 yards on the day. Junior Rodrick Williams led Minnesota in rushing as he rumbled for 52 yards on nine carries, which included a 22-yard scamper.
All four of Minnesota's quarterbacks, who wore green non-contact jerseys, saw action on Saturday and were a collective 17-of-27 for 168 yards. Redshirt sophomore Mitch Leidner, who is the only quarterback on the roster who has seen game action, saw the most action, as he was 7-of-15 for 74 yards. His longest pass of the day was a 22-yard strike to KJ Maye that put the Gophers in the red zone.
Freshman Dimonic Roden-McKinzy, who enrolled in school in January completed 5-of-6 passes for 46 yards, while redshirt freshman Chris Streveler was 4-of-5 for 44 yards. Conor Rhoda completed his only pass attempt for four yards.
Minnesota's four quarterbacks combined to connect with 12 different receivers, with redshirt sophomore tight end Duke Anyanwu leading the group with three catches for 19 yards. Redshirt freshman tight end Nate Wozniak, who stands 6-10, caught two balls for 24 yards, while Cole Banham and EJ Sardinha also caught two passes.
Three different kickers, all of whom are redshirt freshman, put points on the board for the Gophers on Saturday. Andrew Harte drilled a 53-yard attempt, while Ryan Santoso (46 yards) and Justin Juenemann (35 yards) were also on target.
On defense, linebackers redshirt freshman Chris Wipson and De'Niro Laster and redshirt sophomore Nick Rallis led the way with seven tackles. Marcus Jones and Steven Montgomery each broke up a pass, while Jalen Myrick picked off a Leidner pass attempt.
Minnesota opens its 2014 season at home on Aug. 28 against Eastern Illinois.
