fThe 2001 edition of Golden Gopher football is set to be unleashed today in the opening practice of the spring football schedule. Minnesota takes to the practice field today at 3:30 p.m. Head Coach Glen Mason previewed the spring session and the much-anticipated 2001 season at a press conference today at Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex.
"There are generally five things we try to get done," Mason explained. "First is evaluation of personnel - do we have the best players playing and are they in the best postion. Second is experimentation. Third is fundamentals - take a fundamentally good player and make them better. Fourth is conditioning - it has been my experience that players who can go through practices without injuries become `battle hardened,' and this gives us an extra fifteen days to work on that aspect. And fifth, it gives us a month to bring a large group of guys together as a team."
Spring practices continue for the next four weeks on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Practices are closed to the general public. The spring football schedule culimnates on Saturday, April 28, with the 2001 Spring Football Game at the Metrodome at 11 a.m.
