Three University of Minnesota football players were invited to the upcoming 2017 NFL Scouting Combine. Defensive backs Damarius Travis and Jalen Myrick and quarterback Mitch Leidner were extended and have accepted invitations to attend the annual event held from Feb. 28 through March 6 in Indianapolis, Ind. The combine will once again be broadcast on the NFL Network.
Travis played in 53 career games and made 23 starts in the Minnesota secondary. He finished his career with 190 tackles, which included 116 solo stops. The Pensacola, Fla., native made nine tackles for loss, recorded four interceptions, recovered two fumbles and forced one in his time in the Maroon and Gold.
Myrick started 21 of 47 career games at Minnesota. The Savannah, Ga., native made 93 career tackles and broke up 21 passes. He also made five career interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns. Myrick also returned kicks for Minnesota and ended his career with 43 returns for 1,052 yards, which included a 100-yard touchdown against Northwestern in 2014.
Leidner started 41 games at quarterback for Minnesota and played in 47 games. In his career, he rushed 446 times for 1,495 yards and 33 touchdowns, which is the most ever for a Gopher quarterback. Leidner ranks third in school history with 7,287 passing yards and fifth with 36 touchdowns.
This is the fifth straight year that Minnesota will be represented at the combine and previous history indicates that the most recent trio could find success in the NFL.
In 2016, Briean Boddy-Calhoun (Cleveland Browns), De’Vondre Campbell (Atlanta Falcons) and Eric Murray (Kansas City Chiefs) attended the combine, while David Cobb (Chicago Bears), Maxx Williams (Baltimore Ravens), Damien Wilson (Dallas Cowboys) participated in 2015. In 2014, Ra’Shede Hageman (Atlanta Falcons) and Brock Vereen were at the combine and Minnesota’s lone representative in 2013 was Marqueis Gray (Miami Dolphins).
Minnesota had four players invited to the 2010 event, but did not send any players to the combine in 2011 or 2012.
